Tourism

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia and ski resorts with their excellent skiing opportunities and guaranteed snowfall are the most popular holiday destinations. In 2005 Slovakia received foreign exchange rate earnings from tourism of 1 billion Euro, An increase of 10% year-on-year. Slovakia is a country of diverse sights. A land blessed with more than its fair share of natural beauty, a land of snowy mountains, wild forests, spas and lakes. Slovakia is a premier winter destination and has everything you would expect from any typical European resort but at a fraction of the price. Offering a true alternative to the Alps, Slovak mountain resorts will impress any skier who appreciates well groomed slopes, up to date technology and the latest in ski/board equipment in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. A real vacation wonderland, overflowing with culture and tradition with the best ski resorts to make a property investment. Each year, tourism has grown, making the prospect of buying properties, flats and houses in these resorts very attractive indeed. With the continual large amounts of money being invested in these areas, the resorts continue to improve making them some of the most hi-tech in Europe.

Landscape, geographical location and climate

Slovakia is best known for the raw beauty of its countryside: mountains make-up two-thirds of its land, of which forests cover 40%. More than 10000 kilometres of hiking trails zigzagging the country, and dozens of ski centres draw sportsmen from around the world in the winter. There are nine national parks in Slovakia. Under its surface there is a mysterious world of caves, the most famous ones can be also found on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Slovak Republic lies in central Europe. Relatively large differences in elevation are characteristic of Slovakia. Central and northern Slovakia is more mountainous; the Carpathian bow extends across these regions. The south and east of the country lie in the lowlands. The most important river is the Danube, which connects the capital Bratislava with two European metropolises – Vienna and Budapest.

The Slovak Republic is located in a moderate zone with characteristic changes of season. The average daily temperature is -2şC in winter and 21şC in summer. The coldest month is January; the warmest are July and August. Snow remains on the ground an average of 130 days per year in the highest elevations.

The High Tatras

The High Tatras Mountains with its 24 peaks more than 2,500 metres high are the king of the hills of Slovakia. They run 25 kilometres from East to West forming the Tatra National Park. It is the largest national park in the Slovak Republic, established in 1949. There are 110 lakes, or mountain tarns and many waterfalls and caves in the park. In terms of commercial tourism, the High Tatras is the most developed region in Slovakia offering the widest range of facilities for downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking and all-year-round recreation. There are health resorts here as well as the popular holiday resorts of Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica. Downhill skiing and snowboarding fans can choose from a large number of ski resorts in the High Tatras, with a wide range of pistes for skiers of all abilities. Parents will appreciate the ski school services for children, offered during the whole winter season in all ski resorts. The High Tatras have a dense network of well-marked hiking trails of various difficulties through the most beautiful Tatra valleys. The Tatras are a paradise for rock climbers and mountaineers. There are many marked and maintained trails for mountain bikes.

The unique natural environment of the Tatras offers all-year round outdoor activities for visitors of all age groups whether they are active sportsmen, senior citizens or families with small children. That`s why the resort of High Tatras was the place of the 1970 World Nordic Skiing Championship and a candidate for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Some of Slovakia’s best ski trails are to be found here and fans of activities such as; hiking, rock climbing, bungee jumping, mountain cycling, horse riding, paragliding, swimming or rafting will be very happy here also. The High Tatras form a natural border with Poland. The biggest city of this area – Poprad with its international airport is just 5 km away from the major ski resort of High Tatras. Slovakia and its neighbouring countries of Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary entered the European Union in 2004. Poland has a population of 40 million and only one major ski resort to satisfy its demand for winter sports. There is no ski resort in Hungary. The prosperity which has arisen from EU integration has fuelled the huge demand for winter sports, and the High Tatras being only a short drive from the major population centres of Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Krakow has become one of most sought after investment destinations in this country. A future project by the biggest ski lift company in Slovakia, TLD, which will be completed in two years time, will definitely reach the standards of the ski resorts of Austria and Switzerland. This region isn’t famous just for its ski facilities. It is also famous for the biggest golf course in Slovakia located in Velka Lomnica.
