LEVOČA

With its wonderful array of historic buildings this is one of the most important towns in Slovakia.  The town square is surrounded by over 50 Gothic, Renaissance and early-Baroque houses, and the original core of the town is encircled by two kilometres of reconstructed and preserved fortified walls from the 14th and 15th centuries.  The 15th century town hall building houses the Spiš museum. Outside the town hall there is a pillory cage dating from 1600. St James' church is a National Cultural Monument and the second largest church in Slovakia. It was built pre - 1400 with late Gothic re-styling in the late 15th century.  The high alter is the tallest late Gothic wooden alter in the world - a creation of Master Pavol of Levoca and a national cultural monument.

To the north of the town rises Mariánska hill, the meeting place for pilgrims on the biggest annual pilgrimage in Slovakia.  A pilgrimage chapel has stood here since the 13th century, though it was later rebuilt into a small church, and the present neo-gothic basilica to the Virgin Mary was consecrated in the early 20th century.  The 1996 Mariánska pilgrimage was attended by Pope John Paul II.

REGION: SPIS ( ZIPS in German )

CITY: KEZMAROK

Historic Kežmarok town lies in the Poprad basin, 14 km north-east of Poprad. Its earliest written mention dates from 1251, and it received municipal rights in 1269. As a free royal town, among its privileges figured two annual markets, and the rights to bear arms, to fish and to have a coat of arms. Kežmarok is well known for its traditions of craft manufacture and trading. Education and culture have no less rich traditions. The extensive historical core of the town features burgher houses and the remains of fortifications, registered as an Urban Preservation Area. Among the most significant buildings are the Thokoly castle and two National Cultural Sites - the wooden articulated church and the building of the Protestant grammar school.

Kežmarok city castle was constructed as a defensive castle. It is first mentioned in 1463 in connection with the Zapolsky family. Its history is linked with the Tokely family, who rebuilt the original Gothic fort into an ornate Rennaisance residence. They also built the baroque chapel. The castle burnt down several times in the 18th Century and was repaired in the 18th and 20th Centuries. General restoration work was carried out between 1962 and 1985. Since 1931 the castle has housed a MUSEUM WITH HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS and exhibitions about the city and its surroundings.

REGION:SPIS

CITY:POPRAD

This modern town of forty-four thousand inhabitants south of the HIGH TATRAS is a centre for tourism and leisure and the main gateway to this mountain range. The town extends over the POPRAD basin alongside the river which bears the same name. It is an important communications centre with an international airport (currently operating only for private and charter flights). A promising future is in store for the town´s engineering industry, exemplified particulary by the successful Whirpool-Tatramat company, and for the region´s tourism.

The urban heritage reserve of SPISSKA SOBOTA is also a part of Poprad. This former market community has a uniquely preserved historical town square with a Romanesque church which houses a Gothic altar to St. George, the work of Master Pavol of Levoča.

Spišská Sobota is one of the best preserved historical settlements in Slovakia and a visit there offers a welcome complement to a walking or sports holiday in the HIGH TATRAS whose panorama it so enchantingly adorns.
